MATCH Function
The MATCH function in Microsoft Excel is used to find the position of a specific value within a range of cells. Instead of returning the actual value, MATCH returns the relative position (index number) where the value is found.
The syntax of the MATCH function is:
MATCH(lookup_value, lookup_array, [match_type])
- lookup_value: The value you want to find.
- lookup_array: The range of cells where the search is performed.

match_type: Optional argument that determines the type of match:
- 0 → Exact match
- 1 → Less than (default, requires sorted data in ascending order)
- -1 → Greater than (requires descending order)
For example, if you have a list of student names in cells A1 to A5, MATCH can tell you the position of a specific name in that list.
The MATCH function is often combined with INDEX to create powerful and flexible lookup formulas. Unlike VLOOKUP, it can search both horizontally and vertically, depending on the range provided.
MATCH is very useful for locating data positions, ranking, and dynamic calculations. It improves efficiency when working with large datasets and helps users build more advanced Excel formulas with better accuracy and control.
MATCH Function (ଓଡିଆରେ ବ୍ୟାଖ୍ୟା )
MATCH function Microsoft Excel ଭିତରେ ଏକ ଗୁରୁତ୍ୱପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ function ଅଟେ, ଯାହା ଦ୍ୱାରା କୌଣସି value କୁ ଏକ range ମଧ୍ୟରେ ଖୋଜି ତାହାର position (ସ୍ଥାନ) କୁ ଫେରାଇ ଦିଏ। ଏହା value ନୁହେଁ, ବରଂ ସେହି value ର କ୍ରମ ସଂଖ୍ୟା (index) ଦେଇଥାଏ।
MATCH function ର syntax ହେଉଛି:
MATCH(lookup_value, lookup_array, [match_type])
- lookup_value: ଯେଉଁ value କୁ ଖୋଜିବାକୁ ଚାହୁଁଛନ୍ତି
- lookup_array: ଯେଉଁ range ମଧ୍ୟରେ ଖୋଜାଯିବ

match_type: ଏକ optional argument
- 0 → exact match (ସଠିକ୍ ମେଳ)
- 1 → ଛୋଟ କିମ୍ବା ସମାନ value (ascending order ଦରକାର)
- -1 → ବଡ଼ କିମ୍ବା ସମାନ value (descending order ଦରକାର)
ଉଦାହରଣ ସ୍ୱରୂପ, ଯଦି A1 ରୁ A5 ମଧ୍ୟରେ କିଛି student ନାମ ରହିଛି, ତେବେ MATCH function ଦ୍ୱାରା ନିର୍ଦ୍ଦିଷ୍ଟ ନାମର position ଜାଣିପାରିବେ।
MATCH function କୁ ଅଧିକାଂଶ ସମୟରେ INDEX function ସହିତ ବ୍ୟବହାର କରାଯାଏ, ଯାହା ଦ୍ୱାରା advanced lookup କରିପାରିବ। ଏହା VLOOKUP ଠାରୁ ଅଧିକ flexible ଅଟେ।
